Remember the Alamo

It’s ironic that the Big Dawg today writes about nerves and bowl anxiety while I am surprisingly calm, dare I say at peace. The blawging roles are usually reversed. But enough time has passed to afford the necessary perspective that I lacked at the end of the season and I am focused and prepared for a mightly upset of the #15 team in the nation.

I am looking forward to watching Keith Price in good health. I am looking forward to Kasen becoming a household name. This is his first time on a true national stage and figures to play a massive role tonight. All who are watching — sit back and behold the amazing talent in our #2. He is special. I am looking forward to our all-universe tight-end playing with a chip on his shoulder after dropping a sure touchdown against OSU. And most of all, I am looking forward to marveling one more time in the perfect combination of grace and might that is Chris Polk. Stranger things have happened, but it is certain that he will go pro after this game. Thanks Chris carrying such a load – we are looking forward to a lot of dubs tonight. And tonight I honor you by wearing your jersey on my back with tremendous pride.

Finally, I am looking forward to our celebration tonight with friends and family at the Aldred’s house where we are a perfect 1-0 in bowl game viewing. John will get his spot on the couch and we will channel every ounce of bowl magic from last year. Because, God knows were are going to need it.  BLEED PURPLE. BE GOLD. REMEMBER THE ALAMO. GO DAWGS!

Bowl Anxiety

Do you ever get that feeling in the pit of your stomach?  What do you call it?  The butterflies…nerves.  If you are a fan of  a college football team, maybe you have had these feelings as you get ready for a big game.  The Huskies have a big Alamo Bowl showdown against the Baylor Bears led by the Heisman Trophy winner, Robert Griffin III.  I was recently reminded of these feelings by my nephew’s Facebook posts before his basketball games.  I’ve really enjoyed watching him as he and his team improves and it is fun to remember the days.  I remember those gut checks.

So as I make preparations for the gang to come over and watch the game and those anxious feelings start.  I try to figure out how the Dawgs will pull another upset out of the hat.  It can happen again, just like last year in the Holiday Bowl against Nebraska.  I listen to the folks on sports radio reason amongst themselves on how the Huskies can topple the Baylor house of cards.  I don’t know if lightning will strike twice, but I like to think that with the extra time and preparation Sark and his coaching staff can devise a plan to overcome the offensive prowess of RG3.

What I do know for sure is that John will get his special seat on the couch.  What I hope to see is McT sliding across the hardwood floor, Risky Business style after another Husky touchdown.

GO DAWGS!!!  Beat the Baylor Bear!  Win the Alamo Bowl!

Look, if you had one shot, or one opportunity

To seize everything you ever wanted in one moment

Would you capture it or just let it slip?…

You own it, you better never let it go

You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow

This opportunity comes once in a lifetime

Progress

Ever since the last game in Husky Stadium a few short weeks ago, there has been a tremendous amount of activity around the restoration project.  If you are interested in tracking the daily progress, take a look at this link.  It has been only a month to the day, but as you can see, there is a lot going on.

Thank Goodness

‘Tis the season for taking stock of the things that you are thankful for.  After a Beaver hunt turned into a Husky 38-21 defeat and the Dawgs third straight loss, there was not much for the Husky fan to be thankful.  A 2-8 Oregon State team hand the Huskies what has to be the worst loss since Coach Sark took over.  If the TV show Survivor has the mantra outwit, outlast, outplay.  This Husky game the Dawgs were outschemed, outplayed, and outcoached by the evil Beaver. At this point in the season there only was one possibility worse and I will not mention that here.

Thankfully, that is not where the story ends.  The last game of this season happens to be the first “home” game at CenturyLink Field while the Husky Stadium renovation occurs.  The 104th playing of the Apple Cup brought the Cougars into town.  Just in time too, the Dawgs needed to get off the schnied.  The Huskies retain the cup, beating the Cougs 38-21.  For the nearly 65,000 in attendance and for WSU cornerback, Nolan Washington it will be a game to remember.  Kasen Williams had his coming out party scoring two touchdowns and most notably a jaw-dropping, crowd gasping leap over the would be Cougar tackler.  The hurdle over Washington gave fans a glimpse into a bright future this Parade All-American receiver will have as a Husky.  Simply one of the most athletic plays you may see as a college football fan.

As amazing as the “Leap” was, there were a couple more standout performances of note in the Husky victory.  Sophomore quarterback, Keith Price set the all-time Husky season record with 29 touchdowns.  He threw for 3 touchdowns and went 21 for 29 with no interceptions.  His 29th touchdown pass eclipsed the 28 by Cody Pickett in 2002.  Expect to see the Price to Williams connection many times in the next few seasons, but the Husky record-breaking touchdown pass actually went to Chris Polk.  Polk also added on to his school record for 100 yard rushing games, notching his 20th as a Dawg.  Polk was soon thereafter named to the first team All Pac-12 team.

So regardless of what you think of the ebb and flow of this season.  No matter what you believe should be done about the defense or even defensive coordinator.  Even if you saw the Dawgs get drilled by the ranked teams on this years schedule…

Truth be told this is still a program rebuilding from the lowest of lows, three seasons ago.  After all of this…this Dawg fan feels there is much for all Dawg fans to be thankful for.  A 7-5 season, another notch up the win column.  A bright future for a number of young players gaining valuable game experience and 15 extra practices the bowl game brings.  An Alamo Bowl invitation that gives them a shot at the Baylor Bears, one of the most exciting teams in the country.  The combination  of RG3 and the second ranked offense in the nation, paired with a porous defense like the Huskies, promises a potential shootout.  Dawg fans have reason to be excited for what is coming up in both the short and long-term future.

Going Bowling

The official notice is out.

The Huskies were thinking the bowl game options were likely down to two, between the Alamo and the Holiday.  It was also thought we would probably be facing one of three Big-12 opponents…Oklahoma, Baylor, and Kansas State.  It ends up being an invitation to the Valero Alamo Bowl against the Baylor Bears.  The game will take place in San Antonio on Thursday, December 29.  It is going to be fun to see what Sark and the coaching staff will draw up to combat Baylor’s high-flying quarterback, Robert Griffin III.  Remember last years Holiday Bowl 19-7 victory over the Nebraska Cornhuskers…I know you do.

GO DAWGS!!!  Let’s Remember the Alamo!  Beat the Baylor Bears!
