Deserving

It’s always interesting to me the manner in which disgruntled fans on Monday morning attempt to rationalize their team’s loss. God and all of you know I spent the last several seasons digging deep until I finally ran out of excuses. And I am in PR. But you will never hear me say “My team deserved to win” unless it had more points at the end of the game than its opponent. “They should have won” – sure. “They could have won if…” – helloooo (see ND post).

Our stunning late-game comeback against Arizona on Saturday night was another chapter in what is proving to be a thoroughly enjoyable season – playing 60 hard minutes and losing by one possession to LSU; upsetting SC; dominating Idaho; losing in overtime at Notre Dame; and now the Immaculate Interception.

The chatter is inevitable after an opponent out-gains, out-passes, out-complains (see Stoops below), out-everythings your team during a game — “The losing team deserved to win.” Really? I am pretty sure the team that deserves to win every time is the team that has more points when the clock reads 0:00 (excepting, of course, all of our losses which were clearly stolen from us). Throughout a season, and often more than once, the best teams find ways to win ugly by staying tough, playing 60 minutes and seizing opportunities. Opportunities like Jake Locker outrunning the AZ secondary, another goal line stand, three TD passes, four forced field goals, and two takeaways including the game winning interception by Mason Foster. So perhaps we deserved to win because, well…we won the game. Ponder that radical thought. Still not convinced? Apparently the PAC 10 and ABC think so as they just announced a 12:30 telecast for our game vs. the Ducks.

SOUTHERN CAL ARIZONAP.S. Apologies again to the poor lady, who sits in front of me, and to her son who’s vocabulary unfortunately is now slightly larger than it was on Friday.

P.P.S. To Mike Stoops, who thinks the sideline is merely a suggested location where coaches may or may not stand – Karma. More coaching and less screaming at the refs may have better served you my friend.

Bleed Purple. Be Gold. GO DAWGS!
