Optimism Springs Eternal

The University of Washington football team received 30 letters of intent today.  All 30 coming from high school students.  The 2010 class is among the biggest recruiting classes in UW history.  A very productive day for the Huskies as they received 21 letters in the first hour.   National Signing Day is like Spring Training in baseball.  Everyone has hope.  Every team has something positive to say about the group of players coming to their school.  Every player gets compared to a star in their programs history or even the NFL.  Recruiting is big business and  a ton of experts are out there analyzing each school’s classes and each player in fine detail.  One thing these services agree on is that the Husky 2010 class is a Top 25 class nationally.  Scout.com has the Huskies rated at #11 in the country.  There are a number of reasons for excitement about the prospects for this class and the future of the Husky football program.

Coach Sarkisian and his staff with their first complete season of recruiting have done something that hasn’t been done before at the University of Washington.  This is the first time a recruit on national TV has picked UW.  Early this morning on ESPN, Sean Parker, a safety out of Narbonne High School in Harbor City, California had a news conference at his school.  Sitting in front of him were the caps of three schools…USC, Michigan, and UW.  It was great to see the 5th rated safety in the country choose the Huskies, especially when it didn’t seem likely that the  Dawgs could get him.  While the Sean Parker signing is a key to this seasons class there are some other highlights to note.

  • 30 total signed players— team needs the restocking.
  • 12 linemen— 7 for the offense and 5 for the defense.
  • 9 signed in state— put a fence around the state of Washington, the only one we missed was Jake Heaps.
  • 16 of the class are from California.
  • 2 leading rushers out of California signed.
  • 4 signed out of Hawaii— good to see the Dawgs get serious here again.
  • Name recognition that comes with getting Nick Montana.

So there it is, a Top 25 recruiting class for Coach Sark, the pieces are here…now what are we going to do with them.  I would like to see one of these so-called expert services go back five years and do a comparison between their projections and the reality.  Now that would be interesting.  As much as we would like to believe that these kids will be the answer to all the Huskies needs…you know they won’t all pan out.  That said, you have to like the direction that the Huskies are moving.  After all, it is National Signing Day and here are 30 more reasons for Dawg fans optimism.

GO DAWGS!!!
