The Second Coming

My wife reminded me that all potential jinxes have officially lifted now that the 2010 signing day has come and gone which frees me to comment on the prospects of our team and the incoming class. This year’s recruiting class was a huge success – 30 recruits in total. Overall, we appeared to fill a number of holes and many freshman will have a legitimate chance to compete next Fall. ESPN ranked our class at #22 in the nation which includes the top two rushing RBs from Calif., several standout D and O-line prospects and a safety that turned down USC and Miami to be a Dawg. But no recruit has received more attention than the heir apparent to Jake Locker — some kid named Montana. There is a lot to be excited about when Nick enrolls this Spring.

Growing up in the Bay Area, I had the privilege of watching Joe Montana, the greatest QB the game has ever seen (Manning fans, come see me after Peyton wins his third Super Bowl MVP and after he stops pouting following his latest SB loss and then we can talk). Watching Nick as his team beat Skyline last year reminded me so much of his Dad. His patience in the pocket, his sound mechanics, his vision of the field – its all there waiting to be molded. It will be fun to watch his maturation as a player and a person. Learning from Locker and Joe Montana? Could you script a better transition?

So here’s to a great 2010. We are off to a great start. Bleed Purple. Be Gold. GO DAWGS!
